Queen Maeve Cup and National Clubs 2026 – Preview

The chess community is absolutely buzzing today. Tomorrow evening, the prestigious 53rd National Club Championship finally begins. It is the absolute pinnacle of domestic team chess. Furthermore, the highly anticipated Queen Maeve Cup 2026 runs right alongside it.

Coláiste Éanna will host a massive chess festival this weekend. Naturally, the primary focus falls heavily on the National Club Championship. Defending champions Ennis return to protect their national title.

They will face massive challenges from established powerhouses. Heavyweight squads like Gonzaga and St. Benildus always bring a fierce competitive spirit. Broadcasting the National Club Championship Live

Thirty digital boards will broadcast the top championship games live. Fans all across Ireland can watch the tension unfold online. Knowing people are tuning in adds a wonderful, motivating pressure for everyone.

The weekend schedule is going to be incredibly demanding. The first round kicks off this Friday evening at 18:30. Subsequently, both Saturday and Sunday feature tough double-rounds at 11:00 and 16:00.

Competing in the Queen Maeve Cup 2026

While the national title is fiercely contested, our immediate focus is elsewhere. The Ireland Chess Technology Ltd. team is playing in the Queen Maeve Cup. This tournament offers a fantastic, highly accessible format for diverse teams.

We enter this weekend as the top overall seed. I am extremely proud to play alongside our talented roster. WGM Trisha Kanyamarala, Fiachra Moore, and John Kelly.

Carlow Chess Club

Fiachra and John are our friends from Carlow Chess Club, we are delighted we have joined forces to be come a formidable team in the Queen Maeve Cup. John is a driving force behind the rapidly growing Carlow Chess Club. In 2024, they warmly hosted an incredible event for my twentieth birthday.

Trisha and I played exhibition matches and celebrated with their community. Their dedication to grassroots chess is truly inspiring to witness. They successfully organized their very first rapid tournament last year. Read our tournament report here: ictl.ie/blogs/carlow-rapid-2025/

Subsequently, they are hosting another exciting rapid event on June 27th. The Carlow Credit Union generously supports this upcoming summer tournament. You can find all entry details on the Carlow Rapid event page.

Ready for the First Move

Navigating through Friday traffic toward Rathfarnham will certainly require patience. However, the electric atmosphere inside the venue will make the journey worthwhile. We expect intense games and serious time scrambles from everyone.

Finally, we sincerely thank Tournament organizer Sarah Scott from Knights of Éanna Chess Club, Ivan Baburin (Chief Arbiter for National Club Championship) and (Henry Williams Chief Arbiter for Queen Maeve Cup) for taking the responsbility of running this important event in Irish Chess Calendar.
